KUALA LUMPUR: Who did it and what relationship did she have with the perpetrator?
These are the questions surrounding the "kiss and tell" controversy which resulted in Elizabeth Wong offering to resign from the Selangor exco and her state seat.
Friends close to her are pointing their fingers at Wong's former beau, said to be the former personal assistant to a member of parliament in the Klang Valley.
The former boyfriend, also a Parti Keadilan Rakyat member, quit as the personal assistant to the MP last month, believed to be at the same time the relationship ended.
In an interview with the New Straits Times last year, Wong said that she hardly had time to spend with her boyfriend since she began campaigning for the elections in March.
She, however, did not reveal his identity.
Pressed then whether she had any marriage plans, Wong 37, said that it would "depend on her boyfriend", adding that she would decide after the elections.
She had also indicated that he had helped her with campaigning at her constituency after he finished campaigning in other areas he was assigned to.
But her closest friends are convinced that Wong, the chess-playing rock music lover, who has ambitions of reading law, will not allow this episode to break her spirit.
A former workmate and friend, Yap Swee Seng, executive director of Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) agreed.
He said Wong would put her party interests above self, and that her only concern now would be the repercussions this would have on her party, PKR, and the Pakatan Rakyat coalition. "She's a very strong woman," Yap said.
On Wong's personal life, Yap said the reason she was not yet married could be the workload she took upon herself and also because she had not found the right person.
According to Yap, Wong had been passionate about social justice and environmental issues since she left school.
She had focused on human rights for more than 10 years after her student days in Sydney, where she did a degree in fine arts and design at the College of Design.
She spent two years in Nepal in the mid-1990s working as a documentation official, carrying out research for an international organisation.
She then came home and joined Hakam, the National Human Rights Society. She was the secretary-general for Hakam from 2000 to 2006 and is a member of Suaram.
Having done social work both here and abroad, Wong, the youngest of three siblings, became interested in politics in 1987 after the "Operasi Lallang" security swoop.
She was quoted in an earlier interview in the New Straits Times that she "felt something was really wrong when over a hundred people were arrested without trial".
"When PKR came about, she decided to join the party because she saw that as a way forward to push for her human rights and environmental protection issues," Yap said.
Wong was a parliamentary aide for Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail before becoming a politician herself.
She plays the guitar, violin and piano and used to be in a band.
